The Air Jordan 4 was released in 1989 and was designed by Tinker Hatfield, who had previously also designed several previous Air Jordan models. This generation brought several technological innovations, including a visible air cushion in the heel and tongue "wings" that provided better ankle support. The Air Jordan 4 design features the "Flight" symbol, which was first used on the Air Jordan 3. This motif has become one of the signature elements of the collection. Like many Air Jordan models, the Air Jordan 4 became an icon of streetwear culture and remains a fashion and athletic statement to this day.
